NOSTRA NOTES: DECORATE WITH ART

8th November 2018 How to decorate your home with artwork. Hanging artwork in your home is a great way to spruce up your walls, create conversation pieces and create a flow throughout your space. No matter the budget, you can decorate your home with the much needed character it deserves, playing off interior finishes and adding style. You don’t have to be an art expert to display artwork in your home. By following this guide you can easily decorate your home with art and paintings - adding personality and life into your space. Having art in your home is one of the best ways to express your personality, your tastes and style! Here are some easy tips to keep you on track when investing in art for your home. 1. Lead with your heart When it comes to art, it’s all about following your heart and trusting your instincts. Art is subjective - it’s a piece that evokes feeling in you, it could be a reminder of something or someone, or simply a scene or pattern that evokes feeling. Choose art that gives you all the feels. 2. Consider your mediums Art isn’t just about painting. It could be a photography, a mixed media collage or even a screen-print. Consider your dimensions, add a 3-D aspect by investing in a sculpture. 3. Colour is paramount Whether you plan your room around your artwork, or need artwork to suit your existing home decor - the element of colour needs to be considered. While you should never simply buy a painting because it matches your couch, you need to consider how colour will work. Select artwork that shares similar pigments to your home. Take into account your wall colour, soft furnishings and furniture. If your home is classic, then a artwork using muted taupes, chocolate and cream could work. If your space is more Scandinavian with light timbers and white walls then you can afford to introduce a pop of bold colour. Size it up Many people make the mistake of not measuring their space before investing in art. Measure your wall’s dimensions and consider how other furniture in your home may obstruct the view. One of the most important factors of decorating your home with artwork is the scale of the piece in relation to the room. 5. Give it space While having a range of artwork in your home can be interesting, overcrowding them is not a good look. Leave plenty of space between pieces and give them room to stand on their own without being out of context. As a general rule, frames should not touch one another and artwork should be placed at eye level. Artwork shouldn’t be a last thought. At Nostra we believe artwork is one of the most important factors when it comes to interior design. This is because when used correctly, your walls can provide an excellent framework around which you should be able to plan the rest of the room. Look for inspiration everywhere! Whether its the texture of your bathroom tiles, the pigment of your stone benchtop or the grain in your laminate wood flooring, your home offers an invaluable amount of direction. Remember artwork doesn’t have to dominate your rooms, it should simply enhance them.
