WORKING FROM HOME

How to create a sanity-saving office space

Are you working from home? Home offices around the world are suddenly getting a workout, so here is how you can get the best out of your home space!

If you previously haven’t put in much thought to the functionality of your home office space you’re probably now wondering how you can make it a more efficient place to work.

Tips to get you started:

Go for subtle colours

Having lots of colours creates visual clutter, and this can transfer to your mood and affect your thought process. Whereas keeping to one or two colours will maintain consistency and create a calm look in your workspace.

When shopping for stationery and desk accessories, try opting for white, black and neutral tones. If you are really desiring colour, you could stick to a few pastel shades.

Add finishing touches to make it personal to your own style

Create a chic look by adding metallic hues such as rose gold, copper or brass in small details such as paperclips, pens and desk accessories.

Keep loose papers stored away

Utilise drawer space and employ a chic noticeboard to prevent reminders from littering your desk space.

Invest in simple desk and drawer organisers for documents to be stored safely and securely. Use boxes and trays in a uniform hue to conceal other items and tie the look together.

Think minimal

Do you really need that many pens, highlighters or pencils? Store away unnecessary items in drawers and use one at a time until they need to be replaced.

Its best to keep items you need access to daily on top of the desk and pack away everything else. Don’t let a rogue paperclip distract you from that important task.

Don’t have a room? Create a study nook!

Are you lacking the space for an enclosed study? Do you have a tucked-away corner in your living room? Transform this into a study nook by adding a simple desk, and incorporate complementary items such as a simple clock, single plant, framed picture or a sculptural piece. Voila!

Add storage through shelving

Lacking storage space in your office area? The addition of vertical shelving increases the space in the room quickly and stylishly, while also making things easy to find.

It’s also a efficient way to keep your desk space clear and practical as well as keeping personal and inspirational items on display.

Discover your inner green thumb

Soften the mood by channelling Mother Nature and decorate with leafy green plants, succulents and simple florals.

Additionally, these emit oxygen, fight negative energy and add a beautiful eco feel to your office.

Style should be an extension of your existing space

Decorate your home office within the theme of your existing decor. Don’t try and recreate a new look for a small space. Work with what you have! There is great opportunity to embrace colour and patterns in your workspace through accessories and upholstery. By using furniture or accessories to evoke your style – you can continue to upgrade in the most cost effective manner as nothing is permanent or difficult to replace.

With a little know how and a few touches of creativity, you can reinvent your office space and make it an interior design showpiece that exhibits your creativity and flair.
